This is Mathias from another project called "GDKLLR". I've realized that kids from this present generation never knew who Cobra is. Cobra was kind of an anti-hero, not very a saint but with a good soul. Inspired by Jean-Paul Belmondo (check "Flic ou voyou"), Cobra was very popular in the nineties here. So i thought it would be pity for next generations not to know the same kind of hero. Matt is short for Mathias and the story is about religion in a very wierd city.

Bormon Ban'rah 120907

I had the idea one day to start a comic called "Body and Soul" (damn it sounds bad in english). The project was meant to be a partnership with an illustrator who abandonned the ship because of "lack of input" from me. Whatever. So the first volume is written and Bormon is the bad guy. I wanted to do something "organic" eventhough it's a suit. We cant see the eye, only the mouth which shows a cadaver kind. The position is too stiff, but i didnt know really how to draw him. I LOVE his head though.

Ipod girl 251106

I saw a girl on the sidewalk while waiting at the red light on my bike. It was the morning before going to work. She was walking around waiting for the bus, looking at her iPod. Somehow she inspired me because she had some kind of "lalala" attitude. Hard to put words in it but the idea was she could reflect the music she was listening to.

Lilith 2 180307

Another Lilith. It seems that there's this fantasy going on of a bimbo with a big gun. Kinda this nake woman playing cello. I never understood why. BUT Lilith's got a big gun. Here, this piece took me a long time because the colour system is a bit different. The purpose is to use a 10% alpha colour and progressivelly fill everything up. I'm still terrible with women. Lilith is like a wireless puppet, very tall, very thin like a toxicomaniac which she has the look. But her extreme violence makes her deadly, that's the attitude i want to give her.

RED 100606

Finally started the comic "RED". Didnt really write the scenario down, i've got it all in my head. It's a very ambitious project, maybe too ambitious for a non professional like me. A mix of Blade Runner, Tsutomu Nihei, and Ben Templesmith. It will still see the light one day. It's a personal projet and will occur even if not published. This box belongs to the 2nd page. Belial just woke up...

Alice 030406

I've always been a fan of Alice in Wonderland. I'll be honest, i was way to young when i read the book and so i remember more the disney version and the anime one than Carol's. A few years later, i discovered American McGee's Alice. Very dark and crazy. Then i realised that Alice was a bit like Batman; we all have our interpretation. Check the work of Moontan and this more sexy version by Randis. There's also this artist which i forgot the name but did this Alice in asylum series.

I used to do a lot of comical drawing in high school. I have always been a fan of Edika and Gotlib. I shifted toward a more tortured style but didnt want to give up humour. It's also one of the first pieces that i try different colouring systems. Clearly i've been influenced by japanese style of drawing eventhough i started with comics. It's just because it's the last influence, and not because i try to draw like mangas.

If Mara is a bad motherfuka, Fauras is a BIG bad motherfuka. The biggest character in RED". Think of him as a Hulk into bodybuilding. The purpose of this piece is really the background. I got tired of having a plain unicolor back. I'm still like Templesmith, i dont care so much about the environment, i usually focus on the character.

Mara is a bad modafuka in "RED". Lots of demons so i had to do some research and i've got inspiration from Gustave Doré who intensively illustrated hell in John Milton's Lost Paradise. We dont know what Mara really looks like because of the scarf and all we know is that he's got a huge kinda hand as a weapon. He speaks wierd and probably one of the spookiest character in the story. The position is very rigid, but that's because i suck so much at drawing soemthing else than front view scenes. Need to work on that.

Lilith 070205

First femal character. I hate drawing women, i sux so bad at it. At the same time, it conforts me; i'm not that otaku geek drawing naked women as my only social interaction with the opposite sex. Lilith has red hair, drug addict and extremly violent! I'm sticking with Flash outline for now because it hides all my flaws somehow. If i compare with paper/pencil, it does give some lack of "professionalism" eventhough i'm very far of being one. Why are women so hard???!! (that's what she said...)

"RED" is written to be set in Hell. It's really hard to picture Satan as he's been over represented over the time. So i decided to go for a "Brad Pitt look". Why? Because if you're Satan and could take any shape you want, wouldnt you pick someone hot? Joke aside, this is one of the first drawing made in Flash. This is a bit cheating as the vectorization smoothes the lines. As the position, boring front view, obviously my weakness. Also, i'm trying to more and more lose that "realistic" body shape. It's very difficult to 1. have something coherent, 2. somewhat distorted and 3. having my own style.

First character of the comic called "RED". This was my first test ever with digital drawing. At that time, i wasnt even sure what the story would be. So one can see this more as a test. With time, i think i should have made a full black background but i wanted to stick to the title "RED" (eventhough it's more "bordeau").
